Paint Sheen Guide: Choosing the Right Finish for Every Room
A practical note from Home Build Calculators.
Matte and flat
These finishes soften reflected light and help hide minor surface variation. They are often chosen for low-touch spaces, but always check the product label for cleaning guidance.
Eggshell and satin
Eggshell is a balanced everyday option; satin reflects a little more light and is commonly considered for hallways, kitchens, and family spaces where wipeability matters.
Semi-gloss
A brighter, harder-looking finish can suit trim, doors, and moisture-prone areas. Strong reflection also makes dents and uneven prep easier to notice.
Choose for the whole room
Sample the finish in morning and evening light. The same color can feel different as sheen changes, so decide sheen and color together.
Measure twice, write down the product coverage, and leave room for the conditions you can actually see.
