How Many Coats of Paint Do You Need?
A practical note from Home Build Calculators.
When one coat may work
A similar color on a smooth, well-primed surface may cover in one coat, especially with a quality product and careful application.
When two coats help
Strong color changes, porous drywall, patched areas, and uneven sheen commonly benefit from a second coat. Let the first coat reach the stated recoat time.
Primer is its own decision
Primer can improve adhesion or even out absorption, but it is not automatically a substitute for finish coats. Follow the paint maker’s system for your surface.
Plan, then inspect
Use the first coat as information. Check in consistent light, look from several angles, and add the next coat only when the surface needs it.
Keep your assumptions visible.
Measure twice, write down the product coverage, and leave room for the conditions you can actually see.
