How to Measure a Room for Paint

Start with a sketch

Draw a simple floor plan and note wall lengths, ceiling height, doors, and windows. A rough sketch prevents double-counting corners and makes your estimate easy to check.

Calculate wall area

Add the wall lengths, multiply by the ceiling height, then subtract the area of large openings. For a rectangular room, perimeter × height is a dependable starting point.

Measure the ceiling separately

Multiply room length by room width. Leave it out if the ceiling is not part of the project, or include it as a separate line so the decision is visible.

Add a modest allowance

Uneven surfaces, texture, and touch-ups use more material. The calculator includes a waste percentage so you can adjust the estimate without hiding the assumption.
