Caulk vs. Grout: Where to Use Each

Grout fills tile joints and creates a firm, finished plane. It is not designed to absorb movement at changes of plane or dissimilar materials.

Caulk at movement joints

Flexible caulk is commonly used where walls meet floors, around tubs, at trim transitions, and at inside corners—locations that can move or flex.

Match the environment

Choose a product rated for the location and follow its preparation and curing instructions. Color and sheen matter, especially next to tile and painted trim.

Maintain the joint

Remove failed material carefully, clean and dry the joint, then apply a continuous bead. Keep water away for the stated cure time.
